We hadn't been to our favorite family beach spot in almost 2 years, so when my husband and I were awarded summer vacations, we once again took advantage of a trip to Gulf Shores, Alabama. Last year the oil spill kept us away, but this year was as beautiful as ever!

We have our favorite restaurants: Lulu's(Jimmy Buffett's sister's place), The Hangout, Lambert's-"Home of the Throwed Rolls", and my favorite... The Original Oyster House.
They all have good food and I ordered shrimp just about every night that we went out to eat. My husband thinks I am nuts, I say why not since I love it so much?:)

The kids always enjoy playing Putt Putt and we always take a break from the sun at least one day to see a movie and shop at the wonderful outlet mall in Foley.

Goodwill Letter Holder

The $1.99 sticker from Goodwill. I hadn't been in Goodwill for a few weeks and luckily I got this the same day it was brought in. Most of the time if I don't pick something up right then, I will regret it because it seems the good stuff never sticks around long. Since I forgot to take a "before" picture of the front, this is kind of what it looked like. You can get an idea of the color at least.

Here are the two craft paints that I used to transform this Goodwill find. I first used the ivory and then covered it with the Sandstone. I then sanded the edges to distress it and get the shabby chic look that I love.

$1.99 Letter & Key Holder from Goodwill before I finished putting all of the wooden pieces over the words. I love gingham ribbon, especially black and white, so I chose a piece that I had in my scrap bag and just hung it by that instead of by two nails. I was just so ready to show it off that I couldn't wait until I was completely done to take an "after" picture:)

I purchased the little wooden shapes for 40% off at Michael's (Hobby Lobby has them also). They also have fleur de lis ones that I have used before on other projects, but the ones I had on hand weren't big enough for this project.

Now, I am sure that this will be filled with all kinds of papers, etc. before I know it, but at least it is hidden away in the pantry:)

One afternoon I was taking my son to a friends house to play and it just happened to be their trash day. I happened to spot a pile of things and just knew that I HAD to stop. :) Much to my sons dismay and "Oh mom, not again!" HA! They know that if I spot something that looks half way decent that I AM going to stop! I chuckle every time because they are always rolling their eyes at me. One of the joys of motherhood, I guess:)

Anyway, on to the little table that I found sitting on the side of the road... it was dark brown stained solid wood, warped in some places, but that's okay because I knew that I could sand it down, use some wood glue and clamps to fix it enough to make it look just right. I think it turned out so cute and now have it sitting it beside my computer desk. I think it looks adorably shabby chic~ just the look that I LOVE!

First I sanded it down all over, then painted it with a small sponge brush. I just used acrylic craft paint in Folk Art Sky Blue that I purchased at Hobby Lobby. Since the table was so small and I wanted the brown to show through, it only took about an ounce (or half of a bottle of paint). I have yet to seal it with polyurethane, but since I like the distressed look I might just leave it as is for now.

$10 Craigslist Coffee Table Makeover

Who in the world would have thought that I would be able to find a coffee table that I actually liked for $10! I only ended up paying $10 for this old, beat up looking table. The guy was asking $20, but since the glass on top was cracked and one of the drawers didn't line up correctly I offered less and he took it! I didn't care that it wasn't in perfect condition since I knew that all I had to do was sand it down and give it a coat of paint. I even kind of liked it without the glass because I figured my kids would just try to stand on it and break it anyway! :)

Here it is after light sanding and a very light coat of Heirloom White paint by Rustoleum. The drawer on the right is still kind of off track, but it still works and holds a bunch of stuff!

Here is the view from the top. The kids (and cat) like to sit in the middle and stick their head out of the hole in the center.

I just loved the detail in the legs and curve at the bottom. I also sanded the edges a little with my hand sander after a light coat of paint. I love the distressed, shabby chic look.

Maybe you have found as good of a deal as I have at your local thrift store or Craigslist. If you are anything like me, you probably love scouring that site every day just to see what you can find cheap to makeover! Happy Hunting:)

FREE Living Room Mirror Makeover

Here is a mirror that I found lying on the side of the road waiting for the trash man to pick it up. No sense in throwing away a perfectly good mirror just because it had a few scratches on it! I love the shabby chic look anyway.

I just wiped it off and painted over the brown with the trusty Heirloom White that is so popular all over blogland.

A Few of My Favorite Signs and Sayings Around the House

I LOVE any kind of handmade signs and sayings.

I have them in just about every room in my house.

Some sayings are to remind me and some are to remind my kids.:)

Here are just a few of the signs and sayings that I enjoy reading each day.

This one below is in our Master Bath.

This "Bless Your Heart" is hanging in the half bath.

This is a staple in any Southern home and the saying itself can mean a plethora of things. :)

My grandparents always had a little sign at their front door with this saying on it. I will always remember it, so I decided to make my own one day. I don't really like my own writing, but I was in a hurry and wanted to get it up on the wall. So this will have to do... for now anyway.

I got this one at a craft show from a lady who paints all kind of sayings on signs.

She is always at each craft fair that I go to in our area. I am ABSOLUTELY SURE that my kids read it and obey it every day! Just like yours do, right?!:)

I am not quite sure where I came up with this saying, but I LOVE it!~ (Pardon the glare on the photo.)

Now, I came up with this when I saw a sign painted by the lady that I mentioned before at a craft fair. Her sign said, "Iced Tea: House Wine of the South". I told her that it would be much cuter if it said "Sweet Tea". She agreed, and the next time that I saw her, she told me that I wouldn't believe how much money I had made her by her changing that! She gave me a free one just for that. Woohoo! I made this one on my own with scrapbook paper and modge podge on a wooden plaque from Hobby Lobby.

This is my favorite saying, because since I am a Flight Attendant I am gone from home way too often for my taste. I ALWAYS LOVE to come home!

Easy and Cute Memo/Picture Board

I have been trying to work on some more quick and easy projects this past week since I didn't have to end up flying my trip. Yahoo! :)

I have seen these cute wooden painted and distressed picture/memo boards all over blogland reccently (unfortunately I can't remember all of the links to give credit where credit is due.) That's bad blogger etiquette and I apologize. Sorry!:(

First I took a wooden plaque that I already had on hand. I purchased this for less than $1 with a 40% coupon at Hobby Lobby. I drew where I wanted the holes to go and my sweet husband drilled them for me. Yes, I know, I could have done this myself, but I wanted him to feel useful! HA!:)) Afterward, I painted it with acrylic paint, let it dry, then sanded the edges with my beloved Mouse sander. I honestly don't know what I would do without that thing! After I got the distressed look that I love, I glued a bulldog clip(that is their official name I believe, but when I was searching for them at the store I just asked for magnetic clips) between the holes to hold a picture or note, or whatever you want to put there. Then I chose a ribbon and pushed it through the holes with a nail, tied it in a bow and just hung it by the ribbon on the back. You can also sit it on a stand if you have run out of wall space to hang things.

Shown below are the different items that I used. I have made a couple of them now for gifts and actually kept one for myself. These are so easy to make and take no time at all. You can make them in any color combination that matches your decor. Just have fun playing around with different ribbons, twine, raffia, burlap, and jute. I love the texture of three different ones put together.

The was first board that I painted. I chose white, then used glaze to antique it and give it a bit of a faux finish.

This is the black one that I made for myself. I haven't found a place to hang it yet, since I seem to be running out of wall space in my kitchen.

This is one that I made for a gift. I used a wallet size photo on the square ones since a 4x6 is a little too big unless you cut it down a little.

Cute Wooden Valentine Wreath

Goodness, I just can't believe that it has been so long since I actually posted on here! I have been so busy with my 4 kids and flying around the country for my paying job that I haven't gotten to complete as many projects as I have had my *heart* set on!:) This is one that started with a trip to our local Goodwill Store. Yippee, we FINALLY got one here in the town that we live in and I am surprised that the employees don't know me name already! You just never know what you can find, so I MUST check in often (that's what I tell my husband anyway). On this one particular visit I spotted this wooden heart wreath that someone had spent some time and energy on, and I just couldn't let it go unappreciated. I know how much time can be spent on projects, and whomever spent the time cutting out each individual heart and nailing them together deserves to know that their time was well spent. I found this wreath for .99 cents and scooped it up knowing that I could paint it and make it look pretty cute.

Here it is hanging on our front door.

These are basically all of the supplies that I needed: Wood filler, two shades of acrylic paint and a foam brush. Plus the gingham ribbon to hang it by. I didn't even bother sealing it since I like the shabby chic distressed look anyway.

I started off with filling the nail holes with wood filler, then just painted the hearts with two different shades of acrylic paint. After the paint was dry I took my hand sander to the edges and went over them to distress it a bit. Then I just took a ribbon that I already had on hand and hung it on the front door. So easy, cheap and pretty cute if I may say so myself. :) Just the shabby chic, cheerful look that I like on my front door around Valentine's Day, or any day of the year for that matter.

Keep checking your thrift stores around town, you just never know what you will find, and you will probably have so much fun while doing it!

$1.00 Garage Sale Cross Re-Creation

There was a 5 family garage sale that I stopped at today on the way to pick up a cake for my youngest sons class. I didn't have a whole lot of time, but spotted this cross that was made of wood and MDF and was embellished with some flowers and wire, etc. This wasn't my taste, but I could see past the current state of the cross and envisioned making something that would suit me and my whimsical and colorful taste perfectly. I got to work after serving pizza and cake to my sons 4th grade class. They won "Spirit Day" for the whole 4th Grade a couple of weeks ago and a local pizzeria provided them with some pizzas. I thought that they needed some cake too since they just finished the state achievement tests today. Of course I think that cake is a requirement to celebrate just about any kind of special occasion! :)

Anyway, when I finally was able to get to work transforming the cross, I pulled off the flowers, petals and wires. Then I sanded it all down and primed it and then spray painted it with Green Apple by Rustoleum. After I painted it green, I applied Antique White colored polka dots and hung it on the front door. A little late for Easter, but just as cute to celebrate Spring! Even though I think we might have completely by-passed Spring this year and skipped directly to Summer. Temperatures in the mid 80's already. If that is the case, then I just can't wait to see what kind of heatwaves the Summer will bring!

Craigslist Dining Room Table

Since I have discovered Craigslist (in a completely innocent way- trying to find our missing cat) I have become addicted. I like to see what is the best deal I can find for something that I have always wanted or needed. I especially like the items that need a little work like being painted, etc. So far I have found my daughter a new solid maple full size bed, solid oak night stand, dresser and desk with hutch all for $115! I am painting all of the pieces the same color of the ever popular Rustoleum Heirloom White. I ran out of the paint and found out that our local Home Depot is planning on discontinuing it. Why, I will never know since it is so popular they have a hard time keeping it in stock in the first place! Anyway, my mom was on a mission to find more and found 3 cans for me at a store about 30 minutes away.

In the meantime I have found a cute solid wood dining room table with a leaf and 5 chairs (I guess they broke the 6th chair) all for $80! The lady that I bought it from came down on the price twice before I decided that I just couldn't pass it up! The pieces were even prettier in person than from the pictures posted on Craigslist. They were already lightly glazed- similar to my kitchen cabinets that I posted. We needed a bigger table and more chairs than the small rectangle table that only seated 4. I LOVE a bargain!! Not too sure my husband feels quite the same way though!:)

The table had a few paint spots (I think the family that owned it before likes to paint almost as much as I do:)! That is what a table cloth is for anyway. Our kitten, Jackson, seems to like it alright even though he is not allowed up on the tables- he doesn't seem to listen too well yet (he is only 10 weeks old after all).

Anyway, hope you have found some awesome deals on Craigslist like I have!

Painted and Glazed Kitchen Cabinets

Kitchen Cabinets after I sanded, primed, painted two coats of Benjamin Moore Maritime and a coat of Ralph Lauren Smoke Glaze, then two coats of Polycrylic.

The entire process took over a week to accomplish because of drying time and time needed to do other things on my to-do list. Before I got finished the kids were out on Spring Break and I definitely didn't have to time to finish then!

It is hard to tell in this photo, but last year I replaced all of the hardware with some that I found on Ebay for around $1.50 a piece. Just changing the pulls added a lot, but I was never happy with the color of these cabinets so I was so glad to finally get this checked off of my to-do list!

Ever since we bought our house a little over 10 years ago I have wanted to paint our kitchen cabinets. We had to move within two weeks of selling our old house and didn't have time to build or find a house that was being built therefore be able to pick out fixtures, cabinets, paint colors, etc. so finally after getting all 4 of my children in school every day and having some vacation time from work I was finally able to complete the project that I had wanted to tackle for so long. I love the outcome and hope you will too! Take a look. Who knows what I will end up painting next, probably the counter tops since they now look like they have a pinkish tint to them since I painted the cabinets. It is always something and I wouldn't know what to do anyway if I didn't have at least 5 0r 6 projects going at a time anyway:)

Valentine Frames

I am taking these frames to my daughter's Kindergarten class to make as their Valentine Craft. All they have to do is paint the frame and put handprint hearts on the heart shaped card stock then have a parent hot glue a bow to the top. Easy as pie even for 5 year olds (let's hope anyway!:)) I actually distressed mine with a sanding block. I LOVE anything made out of hand or foot prints and I think that these are precious way to keep memories of their Kindergarten year alive (for sentimental Mom's like me anyway) well after graduation!

Quick and Easy Painted Plaques

I was in a creative mood today and thought that I would try out my free sample of Glidden Paint that I ordered several weeks ago. I ordered Ground Nutmeg and painted this square plaque with it and then distressed the edges with a sanding sponge. (The lighting isn't too good in this photo, but I think that you can still tell what the final product looks like). I then copied a "P" off of Microsoft Works at 400% and traced it and painted it on the plaque. I have a wall of just P's since that is what our last name starts with and will probably hang it there when dry.

The other little round plaque is painted green, distressed and stamped with a red Fleur-De-Lis. I love the colors for Christmas (or any time of the year for my colorful kitchen) and the shape is found everywhere these days. I then tied a gingham bow and hot glued it to the back to hang it by. So easy that even those without any crafting experience can do it, and to think that I actually sell these in my Etsy Shop (www.4littlepilgrims.etsy.com)! So super simple and such a cute, quick and inexpensive gift. This would make a cute hostess gift, teacher gift, Bunco gift or just a treat for yourself! Dollar Store Wreath

I finally found the time to help my daughter make the ornament wreath that everyone over blogland has made or is planning on making at some point! My daughter is five and had the best time stringing the ornaments on the coat hanger to make this adorable wreath. We used about 60 ornaments of this one particular size that we purchased at the Dollar Tree. 5 packages in all so therefore the total cost was $5 plus tax! Our cat, Pilgrim, also got into the Christmas spirit and enjoyed being around all of the sparkle and color. The finished picture just shows the wreath, not where it will eventually go. My daughter says that since she made it she wants it to hang on her bedroom door. Fine with me, I would like to make one of my own just out of the champagne and gold ornaments anyway, I think that would look so elegant. Have fun and go spend time with a child making memories to last a lifetime. Happy Holidays!

$10 Dirty Santa Gift~ Ceramic Candy Dish and Appliqued Towel

I just happened to be walking through Wal-Mart and what did I see? An adorable red, white and lime green ceramic candy dish~ and just in my price range! I have to buy a Dirty Santa gift for my sorority Christmas party and my ECW church party and I thought that $9 for this cute whimsical dish was great! I also put one of my new appliqued dish towels in it and voila! So if any of my friends that are attending are looking at this blog, you already know what I am bringing, so shhh!!:)

My Very First Appliqued Dish Towel

I love the look of appliqued items and I had my heart set on making some, even though I don't have a sewing machine. As long as you can iron and make simple stitches you too can applique! What fun I had today making this simple cross dish towel. I found the cute red and white gingham cotton dish towel at Dollar Tree and I used a wooden cross that I had to trace onto some leftover fabric that I had lying around. My son said that it didn't match, but I love the contrasting, whimsical look of the polka dots and the checks. The lime green stitches aren't perfect, but then neither am I and I kind of like the home~made look that it gives. I thought that these would make great Christmas gifts and plan on making many more designs as I find a shape that I like. Go see what you can come up with and let me know how addicted you get too! $20.00 Garage Sale Hutch Makeover

Once in a good while you get extremely lucky at garage sales. Well, I got a steal from a lady down the street who was selling pretty much everything in order to pick up and move 2000 miles away! She said that this hutch needed a lot of TLC and I was just the person that day to give it (plus the $20 that I gave her)! I could see the diamond in the rough- so to speak- and envisioned a beautiful black hutch that I have been wanting for as long as I can remember. I have been married almost 15 years and have had nothing to display my formal dishes in. So sad I know, boo hoo for me! :) Well, I got busy sanding, priming, and painting and even adding beadboard wallpaper to the back part of the upper piece, and this is what I came up with. I love it and it is a wonderful addition to my dining room. I have yet to put the doors back on because one was in such bad shape, and I am not sure that I will even ever want to put them back on. I kind of like it open, for now anyway! I also have to put a coat of polyurethane on the top portion of the hutch, but my husband wanted his parking place back in the garage.:) So this is how it looks for now. Hope you like it as much as I do!

Bedroom Lamp Makevoer

These are two wall lamps that I found at an Annual church Garage Sale back in the Spring. I bought them for $1.00 each. What a bargain! I then bought the lamp shades at Hobby Lobby (with a 40% off coupon) that you can cover yourself with any kind of material, etc. that you like. I found the fabric on clearance at Hancock Fabrics and bought all that was left (about 2.5 yards I think) for less than $4.00! What a deal! Then my friend monogrammed them for me and I repainted the old shiny brass finish with the same Rust Kit that I redid my Dining Room chandelier with. I love the look so much better than the outdated brass finish. Hope you enjoy looking and get inspired to paint something of your own. I love being able to redo things to suit my taste at a great price. That is the only way that I get to do a lot of things around my house~ is being able to do them myself, everything is so expensive to have done otherwise and just trying to feed and clothe 4 kids on airline salaries these days can be quite a challenge at times! :)

Dining Room Chandelier Makeover in a Rust Finish

This dining room chandelier is one I found on the side of the road from a family that had updated their light fixture and was selling their house. I was sure to ask them if it worked before taking the time to paint it, etc. It was formerly a brass finish and I used a Rust Kit (which is just Burnt Sienna textured spray paint and a dark brown paint (watered down a bit) sponged over the spray paint. The second picture is the light fixture after spray painting it with the Burnt Sienna. Sorry, I don't have a "Before" photo to show you, but you can imagine plain ole shiny brass! I love the look and it was FREE! I still have to get some small lamp shades to put on it~ am thinking about burlap ones~ and it will be the perfect look that I love for my dining room! Hope you enjoy the photos and will want to go find something in your house to makeover!

We had the pleasure of visiting our good friends, the Triantopoulos' in Athens, Greece for 6 days in June. The people were so nice and the food (esp. the pastries) were delicious! We loved being able to see The Parthenon in person (of course the hike up the mountain about killed me). Wow, what an amazing piece of history!

St. Andrew's Kingdom of the Son VBS 2009

This year three friends of mine and I were responsible for putting together VBS at our church. We chose the theme "Kingdom of the Son- A Prayer Safari" and we hope that the kids had an awesome time this week! Here is a group photo of the kids and some of the helpers at the oldest member of our church's house. We walked over to sing her a few songs and to have lemonade and cookies. Monogrammed and Aged Front Door

This is our Front Entry Door~ it used to be a "bluegrass green" color but had faded from the strong morning sun exposure. Of course it had been more than two years since I had painted it, so it was long overdue for a makeover. Enter the free dark brown and off-white paint from Porter Paints (not any more since they got a new manager) and a brush, some paper towels and a vinyl monogram that I purchased off of Etsy(I love anything that is personalized) and voila~ a whole new look for the front door. I love it and get so many comments on it because it is truly one-of-a-kind!

Painted and Glazed Bathroom Cabinets

These cabinets in my Master Bath are also painted with the Aging Glaze treatment with an off-white base coat (free OOPs paint that I got at my local Porter Paints store~ yahoo!) and then the Ralph Lauren Aging Glaze in Tobacco (that I didn't get for free) at Home Depot. The first photo is my "before photo" of one of the kitchen cabinets because I forgot to take one in the bathroom before I started~ this is just to show you the color of the cabinets before they were painted and glazed. That is Pilgrim ~our kitty who found a fun resting place during this process! I still haven't gotten hardware to put on them to finish off the look, but I love them so much more that my red cherry fake wood cabinets! Hope you like them too. So far they have held up well to wear and tear, of course it has only been about 4 months! I used two coats of polyurethane on them because I was too lazy to put any more on and the doors had been off for almost 3 weeks!

Fireplace that I Glazed with Ralph Lauren Tobacco Glaze

This is my fireplace that used to be off white. I brushed on Ralph Lauren Aging Glaze in Tobacco and love the look now. (This picture was taken before I took off the protective tape around the edges). The glaze just gives it a real aged look with some texture. I have also done this treatment to my Master Bath doors and trim. I also painted my old 80's oak bedroom furniture with this technique, it is super easy and doesn't require a lot of talent! Perfect for me because you can just brush it on and wipe off as much as you like to get the look you want. Don't be afraid to try it (or any paint project for that matter). After all, it is just paint! :)

Interior Doors that I painted Black

Here are a few of my interior doors that I have painted black. I got this suggestion from my college roommate who lives in Georgia, she had this done several years ago and I just love it! Brings such a sophisticated look to my house(not that I am sophisticated in any way, of course)!

The color is Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black and I love it, I just haven't had the time to finish all of the doors in my house, but eventually I will get around to it!

The color of the yellow walls is Sahara Gold from Farrell Calhoun and the green color in the kitchen is Grasscloth by Behr at Home Depot. Love these colors, although I want to repaint our hallway and living area since they have been Sahara Gold for almost 9 years now. Too long for me to make a change since I usually paint every other year, but those ceilings are just way too high to tackle that often!
